The Authors Guild - Amazon Accuses Someone Else of Monopolizing Bookselling

Amazon Accuses Someone Else of Monopolizing Bookselling

September 2, 2009. Amazon made it official today, filing a brief in the Google case claiming that someone else might gain a monopoly in bookselling.  It seems we're compelled to state the obvious:

Amazon's hypocrisy is breathtaking.  It dominates online bookselling and the fledgling e-book industry.  At this moment it's trying to cement its control of the e-book industry by routinely selling e-books at a loss.  It won't do that forever, of course.  Eventually, when enough readers are locked in to its Kindle, everyone in the industry expects Amazon to squeeze publishers and authors.  The results could be devastating for the economics of authorship.

Amazon apparently fears that Google could upend its plans.  Amazon needn't worry, really:  this agreement is about out-of-print books.  Its lock on the online distribution of in-print books, unfortunately, seems secure.

This made me smile

This made me smile. It made my day. We brought snacks to my 5 yo's kindergarten class this morning. And this is the email I just received from his teacher

"The applesauce with crackers is a huge hit - you should hear all of them slurping and saying "yum" - it's too cute!"

According to my 5 year old Obama will win with a landslide.

So, my 5 year old came back from Kindergarten today and said  "We voted in school today. For REAL"

He had an "I voted" sticker to show me.

Seb: "There were two to vote for, one was McCain and the other was Barack Obama. We check a name off and put it in the box".

Me: "Oh? Who did you vote for?"

Seb: "NOT gonna tell. We're not supposed to tell."

A few minutes later he exclaimed. Eyes widened, "McCain had no votes."

Me: "None at all?"

Seb: "No, actually McCain had 10 votes and Obama had one hundred, eighty THOUSAND votes."

What's for dinner?

Bow-tie pasta (with cheese), grilled chicken topped with peanut sauce and jalapeno.

Kid version without the peanut sauce and jalapeno.

Weird? Yes, but it tasted pretty good.

I'm addicted to coffee but I have an excuse.

In my mind an addiction is something you hang on to and cannot and do not wish to give up because it has become a habit. Every morning I brew my coffee with a coffee press. I cannot go without my morning coffee.

It has become an addition. I've tried going without coffee. On the seventh day without caffeine (including pop or chocolate) I start getting headaches. Withdrawal. Then after a few more days the headaches go away. Yes I am addicted to coffee (or caffeine).

Now at least I have a great excuse:

Coffee is GOOD for your health!

Not quitting coffee anytime soon. Sipping a great cup of coffee as I type this out.
